Did you know that newly built houses have a sump pump installed as per an Ontario Code requirement since 2017? A sump pump is a device that is installed in your basement floor that removes water from your foundation and under your basement slab to help prevent flooding and water damage.
A typical sump pump installation starts with digging a sump pit at the lowest point of the basement or crawl space to collect excess water. The pump is then placed in the pit and connected to a discharge pipe that directs water away from the home’s foundation. The system is then wired to a power source, often with a backup battery to keep it running during power outages. Finally, the pit is covered with a lid, and the system is tested to ensure proper operation and drainage.
Starting February 2025, City of Mississauga is offering rebates through the Basement Flood Prevention program, which includes a rebate up to $6,000 for eligible costs for the sump pump and associated contractor labour, materials and taxes.
Pre-approval is required by the City of Mississauga to be eligible for the rebate, which will require a quote for the estimated cost for the sump pump installation by a qualified plumber. Sump pumps must be installed by a qualified plumber with a valid City of Mississauga business licence.
Rebates will be paid until there is no more funding available or the application period expires, whichever comes first, so don’t wait to apply!
